Our Story

Sparks was founded in 2018 after research commissioned by Barrowcliff Big Local highlighted a clear need for an independent, community-based organisation on the estate.
Residents were falling through the gaps between services, and mistrust of statutory agencies meant many people were not getting the help they needed.
Sparks was created as a different kind of support: client-led, non-judgemental, relational, and delivered by qualified people with lived experience.
From day one, our approach has been rooted in dignity, trust and genuine partnership with the community.
Our five core services - Crisis, Coaching, Connection, Counselling and Careers - are shaped by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, ensuring we build strong foundations before supporting people to move forward.
We work holistically, recognising that wellbeing, stability and opportunity are interconnected.
Over time, Sparks has grown beyond Barrowcliff to support communities across Scarborough and Eastfield. Today, we work closely with the NHS and local partners to deliver neighbourhood Health and Wellbeing services that prevent crisis, reduce pressure on public services, and improve long-term outcomes for local people.
Sparks continues to evolve, but our mission remains the same: to make sure no one is left behind and everyone has the chance to thrive.
